Introduction to Mindfulness Meditation
Mindfulness meditation is a 2500-year-old secular practice that has deep roots in the Buddhist tradition. A practice this old has evolved into many different styles. This variation is a combination of focus (breath) and open awareness (eyes open) practice. This class is lead by Deborah Watson whose teaching certificate is through Dharman Moon and Tibet House US https://www.dharmamoon.com and https://thus.org
What is meditation?
A mental exercise that involves becoming familiar with “something .“ This “something” can be our thoughts, emotions, experiences, or everything.
What is mindfulness
Mindfulness is a skill we all have. When we are pinpointing one aspect of the present moment it creates mindfulness. In this training, the “pinpoint” is the attention on the breath. For a deeper dive into what mindfulness is, hear David Nichtern, Deborah’s meditation teacher, on this podcast https://www.dharmamoon.com/blog/davids-view-what-the-heck-is-mindfulness
Why mindfulness meditation?
We practice mindfulness meditation to see clearly what comes up for us without judgement. It makes space for a change in our perspective which can influence how we handle those times when we get tangled up in our thoughts. Benefits of regular practice have shown to lower blood pressure, reduce stress, manage anxiety, and increase cognitive function. People most often notice being less reactive in their day to day lives. When we “take our seat”, we are not trying to “quiet” our minds or to have no thoughts. It is more like we are making friends with our thoughts.
4-Part Introduction Class; What to expect.
In this upcoming 1.5 hour 4-part series, lead by Deborah Watson, we will meet once a week and learn three easy steps for mindfulness meditation, have a 20-minute seated practice and have a discussion/question period. Participants will learn skills to start a focus (breath) and open awareness (eyes open) practice. This non-guided practice is done with eyes open to facilitate an easier transition from our meditation practice into our daily lives. We will explore the three benefits of mindfulness meditation which are to build strength, stability, and clarity of the mind. Lastly, we will learn and practice deep listening skills.
“Nobody else can get inside your heart and mind and move the furniture around. You’re the only person who can do it. “
