Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a Tower Mat class and a Private session?
The Tower Mat class is taught in a small group of 6 people and uses 2 pieces of apparatus. The Mat work is the core of the Pilates Method and is the most difficult work. Private sessions or duets use 6 pieces of apparatus that build upon the mat work and go beyond it. Private sessions involve closer interaction with the instructor.

Do I have to be an athlete or a dancer to participate in Pilates?
Absolutely not. Pilates is appropriate for people of any age or fitness level.

Can I participate in Pilates if I have back problems or other injuries?
Many people with physical injuries enjoy the benefits of Pilates. However, the Tower Mat classes are not appropriate for those with injuries or back problems. During a private session, a certified Pilates instructor can give such an individual the extra attention required.

Do men participate in Pilates?
Absolutely, everyone from professional athletes to regular guys are reaping the benefits of Pilates. Currently, men make up 15 to 20% of our clientele.

Can children take Pilates ?
Kids as young as 6 can get involved in Pilates. Their sessions take the form of private lessons or duets and are shorter in duration than an adult Pilates session. The focus for childrens' sessions is balance and posture.

Why should I look for a Romana's Pilates Certified instructor?
A Romana's Pilates Certified instructor has gone through over 700 hours of training and apprenticeship, preparing her to teach the precisely controlled body positions involved in the Pilates Method.

Some instructors that claim a connection to Pilates, but are not Romana's Pilates Certified instructors, have taken only a weekend seminar before attempting to teach the work.

How long will it take to feel a difference?
After only one session, you will experience a heightened awareness of your body, particularly your posture. However, Pilates is not a quick fix and works best with a long-term committment.

This awareness you'll feel right away will become more keen with each session and will soon be accompanied by a noticeable strengthening and lengthening of the abdomen, lower back and buttocks.

How are the prices established?
Pilates instructors are offering their most valuable asset, their time. They have also invested a large sum in their training and specialized equipment, as well as the setup and maintenance of the studio space. All of these costs are factored into the pricing structure for each type of Pilates session.

What should I wear?
Any comfortable clothing that offers a full range of motion, including shorts, t-shirts, leotards, etc. Shoes are not worn during a Pilates session, but socks are. Please bring a towel.
